I’m not sure which is emptier, the current unfilled capacity of California’s water reservoirs or the mentality of Fresno City Council member and self-described tea party stalwart Steve Brandau’s billboard campaign touting the tea party’s desired Pyrrhic triumph of dams over trains.
I’m sure that back in the horse and buggy era there were those who insisted the solution to the triumph of horses and buggies over the encroaching modern transportation option was to make more horseshoes.
Just as clinging to horses and buggies did not make sense then (Amish exempted), building unfillable reservoirs makes no sense, as an alleviation of an extended drought while our local culture of profligate agriculture focuses on producing water-intensive permanent crops in a desert.
Public water and transportation policy needs to evolve beyond nostalgic nonsense and politically myopic billboard screeds.
