I wish to provide some perspective as a mother with regard to the May 7 article “Mother of caged student sues FUSD.” Reporter Hannah Furfaro states that a mother was upset to see her daughter, who is special needs and has a seizure disorder, “caged” and in a soiled diaper. The other teachers knew about this caged area and all talked so highly of this teacher.
The issue is, if the teachers all knew about it why wouldn’t the parents be informed, too? Parents and teachers should communicate that if the child were to have a seizure what precautions should be taken.
Unfortunately, now the child suffers from fear, anxiety, low-self esteem and is undergoing psychological counseling. With more communication from both ends, the teacher could have found out what works best for the child and could have done what was best for the child.
