Homeless aren’t blight

I really feel sorry for Dian Karabian’s eyes (letter March 24). They must be sore from all the crocodile tears she is shedding. They also must be blind, for she cannot see the reality of the homeless.

These are people, not things. They are on the street because our system has failed them. Yes, many are failed human beings. That’s no reason to castigate them for being less or more “presentable.” It’s all in the eye of the beholder. I see people who need shelter and assistance, not a blight on the landscape.

She is also wrong about blaming the local politicians. Yes, they in Fresno, Visalia and Tulare all suffer from whiteout-itis. If they ignore the problem, it will go away. But it is everyone’s problem. The community must decide — as Malcolm X said, the ballot or the bullet?
