As pediatricians, we appreciated your editorial “Teach kids ‘Yes means yes’ well before college” (Mar. 9). We’d like to echo the editorial’s urge for the need for true comprehensive sexual education programs in our Fresno public high schools.
The Fresno teen pregnancy rate is 43 girls in every 1,000, which is nearly twice the California state average. Meanwhile, Fresno Unified School District has effectively eliminated sexual education in our local public high schools.
We often speak with our teen patients who have limited, if any, concept of sexual health. How can we expect them to grasp what it means to have consensual sex when they don’t even understand their own bodies?
We welcome this editorial piece and strongly encourage discussions to re-introduce a comprehensive sexual education program to Fresno Unified School District. As pediatricians, we are always willing to improve and participate in the health and education of our teen patients.
