Recently, I called a half-dozen of my favorite local restaurants to make reservations for eight people and none of them wanted my business. If I had a party of 12, they would take me (and automatically add a gratuity without giving me the opportunity to judge their service, which is what a gratuity is based on).
Since when did businesses turn away guaranteed revenue? I want to spend money at your establishment, that’s why I am calling, to make sure I can. They all said I could come in and wait in their lobby or “enjoy one of our exciting cocktails” at the bar. I didn’t ask if they had exciting kid cocktails for two members of my party. Maybe I’ll meet a random party of four at the bar and call from there for reservations — or go to one of the other 4,994 restaurants in the area.
