Re: Where is Fresno’s state-of-the-art trade school? (Feb. 25 editorial). I am a highly qualified and experienced English language and composition teacher. I would jump at the chance to teach at such a school.
The construction of a business entrepreneurial high school near Ratcliffe Stadium is a step in the right direction, but it doesn’t go far enough; such a school will not be an option for the hundreds of disaffected youth in our city who end up perpetuating the cycle of violence and poverty because a business education looks the same as a college prep one.
These kids who are most at risk never learned the benefits of delayed gratification; it’s not their fault. A secondary school curriculum that combines basic English and math skills with hands-on training for career readiness has worked in Europe for decades; Americans must learn to honor all careers.
There are many qualified and experienced teachers who would, like me, embrace the opportunity to mentor willing students through their journey toward responsible citizenship. If you build it, we will come.
