The right-wing ideologues, coupled in this country with the holy-cow sacrosanct view that capitalism and therefore business is the answer to everyone’s well- being continues to sink the poor poorer and the rich axiomatically richer.
What is more laughable, if it weren’t so tragic, was the content of The Bee’s Feb. 20 Opinion section, “Wal-Mart is raising everyday low wages.” Wal-Mart continues to play this rah-rah, pom pon-waving all-American card with the propaganda that unionization is bad for both the worker and the consumer. This could not be further from the truth. It’s only bad for corporate profits and ever-expanding effort to make lambs, better said, “sheep,” of us all.
This all amounts to a human-rights violation championing the ever-lowering of living standards with wages that don’t keep up with reality for families who support a “ padron” system, where workers pay homage to the hand that feeds them by accepting disgracefully low wages.
America should guarantee living wages that break the poverty cycle and share, in some form, the fruits of their labor with the poor and working poor, and begin to erase the pathologies that poverty creates.
