Regarding The Bee editorial “Nanny State is circling irresponsible bike riders,” (Feb. 16):
Let’s be honest, to headline this opinion the way you did tells me something. Are you really trying to enlighten the readers or just trying to provoke some more animosity towards bicyclists?
I have seen both sides of this scenario from the seat of a bicycle. Folks are really time sensitive in this state. They are in a hurry and bicycles are just one more obstacle to negotiate from point A to B. Yes, we have all blown through stops. So have the majority of cars. California stops ring any bells?
A law requiring helmets is no different than one requiring seat belts. If we left 15 minutes earlier, maybe we would feel less animosity toward the bicyclists. Less stress in a 4,000 lb. vehicle might lead to a brighter day and more appreciation for our beautiful Valley.
The bicyclist beside you has taken a car off the road. “Less bad air” plus cardio exercise equals less sick people. This is a win but can we truly accept it? Are we ready for human kindness? You make some good points. Let’s drive responsibly. The life you save may be your own.
