Bee editorials and cartoons assert that the Koch brothers have been and are buying elections.
The facts: from 1989 to 2014, the Koch brothers, individually and through the super political-action committee Americans For Prosperity, were the 60th largest political campaign contributors on lists compiled by several different monitoring groups. Fourteen of the top 25 donors were labor unions, who donate to Democratic candidates and measures over 95% of the time. The top contributor was Act Blue, a self-described “clearinghouse for Democratic action.”
The Koch brothers did outspend George Soros (“the godfather of liberalism”) in total political contributions from 2002-2012 but the great majority of their cash went to institutional lobbying, which is transparent and not connected to election campaigns. Considering only the dark money going to PACs and SuperPacs, Mr. Soros outspent the Kochs $34 million to $4.06 million, according to the Center For Responsible Politics.
I’m as repulsed by the big money poured into political campaigns as The Bee is, but I am more disgusted by the media’s loud (and false) claim that conservative groups are the ones corrupting the democratic process and buying elections. Democrats outspent Republicans two to one in the last midterm election.
