A recent letter by Ms. Joyce Orr (Jan. 20) shows that she, among others, does not remember that the Endangered Species Act passed by the Nixon administration covered species that are beneficial to our ecologic environment; the delta smelt, being one.
This small fish is the “canary in the coal mine.” Its demise will indicate total collapse of the delta ecosystem forever. Consistently conservative Ninth Circuit Judge, Jay Bybee, a George W. Bush appointment, ruled that “these species of fish wildlife and plants are of esthetic, ecological, educational, historical, recreational and scientific value to the nation and its peoples.”
Along with this, damming a river, creek/waterway that flows into the ocean will allow salt water to flow into that area, destroying the land with it. Our ecological system is delicate, and I believe was created for a purpose. Anything destroying it will have consequences forever.
