I read the title “State of the Union: Wealth disparity must be faced” (editorial Jan. 21) with my jaw agape. The liberal bias of this viewpoint represents the worst of our country. Since when was it our government’s role to take wealth from one party to give to another because there is a gap in net worth? That went out with the Berlin Wall; they don’t even do that in China anymore. Why? Because it won’t work. This is just lazy thinking that wants to fix a symptom, not address underlying causes.
If you really want to cure this disparity, stop subsidizing people who can work. Stop paying more for babies born to single, unwed mothers, stop allowing illegal immigration which subsidizes labor consumers like the Fortune 500 and rich people hiring nannies and gardeners at below-market wages. Give tax breaks to the middle class and put tariffs in place to block foreign-made goods produced in subsidized businesses or made by slave labor.
Who will decide how much is too much? Who will decide who gets what? Only an impersonal free market can do this efficiently. So provide one, and stop this foolish pandering to public emotion.
