Change is needed

As a physician who has provided services within the Community Medical Centers system for 20 years, I am certain that hospital officials (like John Zelezny, In Brief Dec. 17) are looking forward to the opportunity to bring their policies dealing with lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender patients into compliance with current law and best health care practices. I am hopeful that the article overstated any reluctance the CMC system might have in making the necessary changes.

Over the past several months, as I have battled cancer, I have been a frequent consumer of health care in multiple settings in Fresno, including CMC. I can personally attest to the fact that change is needed throughout our health care community to bring LGBT health care policies into compliance with current law and best practices.

Gail Newel, M.D.
