'A good Orwellian'

In opposing AB 374, Edmund Hurlbutt Jr. (Valley Voices May 5) piles absurdity on absurdity. He claims that AB 374 would destroy freedom and self-determination, for it would give government the power to decide which human lives are worth living and which are not.

His support for this absurd claim? "he very essence of legalizing assisted suicide is refusing government investigation into the deaths of certain classes of people." This is another absurd claim. It is exactly like saying that the very essence of legalizing suicide, something California did decades ago, is refusing government investigation into the deaths of certain classes of people.

That is not the essence of legalizing suicide, and it is emphatically not the essence of legalizing "assisted suicide." So, Mr. Hurlbutt's main reasons against legalizing "assisted suicide" are absurd.

His other reasons against legalizing "assisted suicide" are weak and require a lot of support. He offers none. He prefers to spend much of his piece vilifying Assembly Speaker Fabián Núñez and trying, like a good Orwellian propagandist, to make it seem like those who support the liberty of adults to make their own decisions concerning their life and death free from government interference are arrogant supporters of totalitarianism.
