Five county high schools -- Selma, Laton, Sierra, Edison and Clovis East -- were recently honored by the state as Distinguished Schools. This puts them in the top 7% of all high schools and middle schools in California.
However, The Bee buried this information in the middle of the B section, with about a dozen lines of information. When there is a negative situation -- API, AYP or a teacher forgetting to turn in some forms -- The Bee is all over these stories with big headlines and articles. But if there is a positive note, The Bee gives it little or no attention.
Why not run a five-part story highlighting each of the schools, one at a time? Let the public know there are schools that are succeeding. Let the public know what the schools are doing in order to succeed.
