The Bee has published editorials critical of the Fresno Unified School District Board's "micromanagement" of Superintendent Michael Hanson. Mr. Hanson has much promise, but he is in his early 40s, and this is his first job as superintendent. Fresno Unified has major budget and academic problems, and Mr. Hanson may or may not provide effective leadership. The prior superintendent, Santiago Wood, did not.
In that context, voters should expect and demand their elected board members to exercise a very high degree of oversight. Balanced coverage of substantive differences between the board and Mr. Hanson will help voters choose board members.
