Letters to the Editor

'Why bash Israel?'

Recently there have been several letters and op-eds bashing Israel. Outrageous accusations, completely unfounded, are quoted like indisputable fact. We are the most powerful nation in the world, and public opinion here matters for Israelis and Palestinians.

The Palestinians have historically gotten a rough deal. A whole lot of it is due to their leadership, from the Nazi Mufti of Jerusalem in the 1930s and '40s to the corrupt, murderous Yasser Arafat of the more recent past. Israel has not always behaved perfectly, but then it's hard to be perfect under fire.

The founding of Israel did not dispossess any Palestinians. The war that the Arabs started in response did that. The barrier that Israel is building is not intended to oppress Palestinians, but to keep terrorists out. Could it be made less oppressive for Palestinians? Certainly. But why is it needed?

The majority of Israelis want a two-state solution, Israel and a Palestinian state living in peace. The new Palestinian government, led by Hamas, states explicitly that there won't be peace as long as there is an Israel. So why bash Israel?

You can find out what's really going on in Israel and Palestine at my blog, FresnoZionism.org.
