Should be ashamed

I could not believe my eyes when I opened my paper [March 17] to find that school children are being given cheese sandwiches because their parents are behind in paying for school lunches. A comment by Lynelle Grumbles stating, "I know it makes kids feel bad, but that's the whole point. We need to get parents' attention." She ought to be ashamed!

To knowingly make a child feel bad goes against the grain of every effort school districts say they are making to provide equal education to all children. As educators, they should be smart enough to find another way to get parents to pay up. They are teaching children that there are separate class distinctions between the "haves" and the "have-nots."

When we are at a critical time trying to give children encouragement for further education, school districts are causing them to feel less valued thus possibly ruining their self esteem, which is critical for this age group and essential for the minority and poor children of this Valley, the groups the schools state they are working hardest to give more opportunities. They should find another way or give the job to someone who can.
