'Collective responsibility'

In response to Bart Terrell's statements concerning Virginia's apology for its role in slavery, I would like to point out that the "psychiatric soul cleansing" he sneers at is exactly what he is doing by redefining centuries of slavery as an opportunity to purchase luxury automobiles.

The gesture by the state of Virginia, albeit a symbolic one, at least acknowledges that the hideous institution of slavery has cost our country in countless ways. Let us please remember that the denial of slavery's continuing toll, as well as misplaced collective guilt, provide no solutions to our current problems. Only through collective responsibility can we move our country forward.
