Pageants have never really been my thing, so imagine my surprise at actually enjoying one Feb. 17 in downtown Fresno.
My friend, Michelle, and I ventured to the Miss Fresno County Pageant to support our neighbor and "adopted" little sister in her first pageant attempt, and found a lovely way to support scholarships for young ladies in the Valley. It was absolutely not about swimsuits and all about volunteerism and higher education.
The Veterans Memorial Auditorium was packed with friends and families yelling so loudly you would have thought you were at American Idol. The judges ranged from Gen. Ed Munger to Dr. Pete Mehas. In a town where people are always lamenting a lack of support or activities, this pageant is a little hidden gem that I would recommend supporting in the future, as well as family friendly entertainment.
Our evening couldn't have been more perfect -- after all, the crown for 2007 went to one of the sweetest, most genuine girls we know, our friend, Jaime Munro.
