Taliban thinking

Re: W. Edward Chynoweth's letter [Feb. 5] "Defying human nature," the only difference between his attitude toward women and that of such groups as the Taliban is not one of kind but of degree.

Both he and they see women as inherently inferior to men. According to both, women need to learn their place and be content with the fact that, because of divine decree and accident of birth, they are forever destined to be second-class citizens. They should be happy that men only want to spare them the onerous burden of assuming their rightful God-given place as co-heirs and stewards of his creation.

Unfortunately, this type of thinking has given rise to all sorts of abuses against women, all in the name of "protecting them."
