The recent kidnapping story of two young boys in Missouri has caused a retelling of the Steven Stayner kidnapping that took place in Merced in the 1970s. We appreciate that. Steven not only saved himself, but he saved a 5-year-old his kidnapper had abducted a few days before.
Recently a small group came together to raise funds to build a monument to the memory of Steven. The purpose of the monument is threefold: to honor Steven as the genuine hero that he was, to keep other missing children in our community from being forgotten and as a reminder of the constant need for vigilance to protect our children from those who would do them harm.
We are still raising funds and we have a Web site that has information on the Steven Stayner story and excellent resources on ways to protect children from predators. Check out our Web site at www.stevenstaynermemorial.org. Since the story in Missouri broke, the site has had more than 20,000 hits.
