Race overshadows

With all of the excitement surrounding the upcoming Super Bowl between the Indianapolis Colts and Chicago Bears, a single piece of information seems to pop up in nearly every story covering the big game: race. So we have two head coaches who are African American, and somehow this appears to eclipse even their own accomplishments. Would they like to be seen just as African American coaches, or as skilled coaches who have led their respective teams to one of the biggest sporting events worldwide?

I can't help but be reminded of Halle Berry's Oscar win a few years ago. The issue of race (never mind the fact that she's as much a European American as she is an African American) completely overshadowed her acting accomplishments that year.

It is no secret that the media are strong advocates of racial equality, but the fact that they can't seem to let go of racial differences seems a bit hypocritical.
