Letters to the Editor

Our right and duty

Re Jim E. Moore's Jan. 20 letter entitled "Another Churchill": Unfortunately, Mr. Moore, like many Americans, needs a refresher course on how our government works.

The president of the United States has no legal right to start a war. Only Congress has the right to declare war. And in response to his question, "Where were all the Bush-bashers" during Vietnam? We were marching in the streets and writing our congressional representatives to stop that war, too, just like any patriotic American should do!

We are a representative democracy -- the government is not them, it is us. As American citizens, it is not only our right, but our duty to express how each of us feels about what our representatives, including the president, are doing.
