In support of the excellent commentary by Ruben Navarrette Jr. Dec. 6 concerning racism and the Los Angeles Fire Department, I would add: America would be a great place to live if the country was not so racist, sexist and homophobic.
There seems to be a constant conflict of "us" against "them." Whoever can be manufactured as a fear becomes the stereotypic, them. The usual racist, sexist, homophobic response to such is: America, love it or leave it.
A better response might be: How do we correct such evil perpetrated upon others? Perhaps a first step toward eradicating hatred is for more adults to grow up.
