I deliver The Bee in the very early mornings out in a rural farming area, and quite often I smell burning wood on no-burn days. I wonder why the farmers are burning? Why not mulch? Surely that's a more environment-friendly method.
Perhaps the answer is that mulching is prohibitively expensive and there is a waiting list for the few companies that do it. What we need is to subsidize mulching, making it more lucrative for the mulching companies and more affordable for the farmer. Maybe then the middle-of-the-night illegal burning would stop.
