I read California State University, Fresno, President John D. Welty's column (Nov. 26) and had to chuckle over his arguments in favor of the Campus Pointe development. All presidents can rationalize their actions, but this aggressive attempt to invoke a change in the mission of the CSU is one big step in the wrong direction.
Fresno State is not a private university and does not need to get into competitive business ventures in order to survive. CSU is mandated by the state and funded by the citizens of the state. The president should muster all his energy and concentrate on the main mission of the university: ensuring that all the students have the best facilities and staff that will ensure their success and contribute to the well-being of the community and the state.
