The Fresno County District Attorney's office has a new way to further overcrowd our county jail -- arrest the parents of truants. Not a bad idea on the surface -- after all, it is an intimidating motivator for lazy parents.
But what about all of the students who, when left at school, go in the front door and out the back without the knowledge of the parents? It would seem the next logical application would be jail time for the school officials who allow children to wander away from campus.
Are the parents responsible for what happens while we have entrusted our children to our area schools? Apparently District Attorney Elizabeth Egan thinks so. The only thing I know for sure is next time I drop my children off at school, I'm going to ask for a receipt.
