I remember Thanksgiving at Boulder City, Nev., during the construction of Hoover Dam. We lived in company housing. The company also built a large community center used by the American Legion and the Legion held a Thanksgiving get-together every year.
These holiday meetings were really exciting for the kids. I remember it as being a warm and happy time where turkeys and food baskets were raffled off and we kids got gift packs with an orange and nuts, along with a little toy. The raffle tickets were a nickel apiece, and during the drawings, the excitement was overwhelming. I remember my mother pulling pinfeathers from the turkey the next day.
These are warm memories of a simpler time.
