The tragic death of a 13-year-old Ahwahnee student most likely could have been prevented if the bystanders had the courage and compassion to intervene. Yes, there are possibilities of getting hurt or even being involved in some legal mess. However, if the conflict involved one's own child, grandchild, brother or nephew, the scenario would be different.
Protecting a child, regardless of relation or circumstances, is everyone's responsibility. Even though we have some heroes amongst us, I must regretfully say that we live in a society of self-indulgence and apathy.
We better wake up, or we may be next -- hurt or doomed.
