Surprising admission

I was surprised to read Victor Davis Hanson's column [Oct. 15] admitting "our government's incompetence and arrogance have nearly ensured America's failure in birthing democracy in Iraq." I think bringing democracy to Iraq was the fourth excuse our president used for invading Iraq.

Dr. Hanson's criticism of the authors' books about the fiasco in Iraq failed to mention that Bob Woodward's book informed us that Colin Powell was fired. Do you think that has anything to do with him telling the president that if he invaded Iraq he would be responsible for it? I think a Vietnam vet has a better understanding of this than Donald Rumsfeld and Dick Cheney.

Mr. Woodward also informed us that Henry Kissinger is now advising the president. Just what we need.
