The agreement reached by the litigants to restore the San Joaquin River is more than a triumph for the environmentalists and the fish. It is a win-win situation for all the people in the Valley.
Our environment will improve; our farmlands will continue to receive the water needed to sustain the local economy. The solution is one we can all live with, and benefit from. But it will require continuous and long-term help from Congress.
Therefore, in November, we should make certain that we elect those candidates who genuinely care about both our environment and agricultural economy, while at the same time fully understanding water issues, and who respect the rule of law. We cannot afford those who represent narrow interests or sound false alarms which prey on people's sentiments or fears.
