This is a challenge going out to all teachers. “Digital natives”, a term coined by Marc Prensky, are filling the seats of every classroom here in the United States. These digital natives have grown up with technology and have come to expect that tech is seamlessly integrated into their daily lives.
We as teachers long to be relevant to our students. To achieve this, we must embrace new apps, new software and new hardware to make our classes powerful learning environments. Yellow overhead projector transparencies are not cutting edge. As digital immigrants, we have often used our age as an excuse to turn from tech. This is no longer allowed.
We no longer get to choose to be old school. Bottom line, our students deserve teachers who are innovative and who truly integrate technology into their everyday classrooms. Teachers, it’s time to step up.
