I read reporter Rory Appleton’s article regarding former Sheriff Joe Arpaio’s visit to Fresno. Did he get it right? I’ll leave that up to each attendee to judge. What I didn’t appreciate was Mr. Appleton’s snide “And what do you serve at a Joe Arpaio speaking event? Mexican food, of course. Enchiladas and chile verde.”
Ironically, at the following evening’s Arte Americas’ 30th anniversary celebration, I expected to hear about the arts in Fresno County, and all that Arte Americas has accomplished. Although there was some of that; I felt the event was unnecessarily politicized.
I was especially disappointed to hear the evening’s award winner, Sarah Reyes, speak negatively about our current administration, in defense of La Raza. Although entitled to her opinion, I was disappointed she chose that venue to air it. If I wanted to hear similar views, I could have turned on CNN or MSNBC.
And what do you serve at an Arte Americas celebration? “American” food, of course. Braised short ribs and garlic mashed potatoes, with rolls and sweet butter. Tortillas were conspicuously absent. I must admit, it was delicious!
