I found the article “New report names Fresno among best places to live if you are a teacher,” (April 24) misleading in actual salaries and reasons why we have been experiencing a teacher shortage. After almost 25 years, I am at the top of Fresno Unified School District’s pay scale, but many teachers struggle to pay for the college units necessary to move up.
An expired contract and the district moving to increase teacher cost of health-benefit costs, campus safety issues, discipline, low-performing students struggling with academics due to poverty, disruptive students and expectations for teachers to spend more time in meetings and not being treated as professionals are undoubtedly the reasons for the teacher shortage.
We lose new teachers within the first five years who find the job too challenging with low pay and veteran teachers looking at changing careers or retirement because they are burning out from the realities of teaching.
