I attended the Fresno Unified School District hearing for University High School’s charter renewal.
UHS diversity, in comparison to FUSD, was a main issue. However, it was stated that only 39 percent of UHS students come from the Fresno Unified area, meaning 61 percent come from somewhere else (Madera, Hanford, Clovis, Sanger, Oakhurst) so it is not reasonable to solely compare them to FUSD.
Trustee Cal Johnson’s comments and negative contribution at the hearing, as a community leader in education, was disappointing. If he wants to see more “people like him” at UHS, perhaps accepting their invitation to visit the campus would be a good starting point and show a level of maturity as a leader.
Trustee Valerie Davis made a naive reference to a UHS “mother ship” located in Los Angeles. This shows me there is a lack of knowledge regarding charter public schools among our school district leaders who have the power to vote for or against charter authorization.
UHS is a top-ranked school nationally, putting Fresno on the map in a good way. FUSD should be honored to authorize University High.
I urge you to visit http://www.ccsa.org/understanding/ to learn more about charters.
