Proposition 56 seems like an easy way for California to make some money off the backs of those evil cigarette smokers. But as you make your decision on how to vote, please consider this; Proposition 56 as it is currently written, will result in less tax revenue the state on the sales of cigars.
Proposition 56 will triple the tobacco tax on cigars. There are three quality cigar shops in Fresno, all run by local families who have invested their life savings into their businesses. These businesses never sell or encourage tobacco use by kids and are very involved with their generosity in actively supporting their community to make it a better place.
It’s important to understand that with the at the current high tax on cigars in California, our retailers already struggle because it’s easy to find the same cigar online for much cheaper, primarily because they do not pay the California tobacco tax.
If Proposition 56 passes, with the massive price increases it will cause, all it will do is encourage more cigar smokers to go online which will result in less tax revenue to the state. That will happen.
