Like the Fresno Unified School District educator who was assessing the language level of a Syrian refugee child, (Bee article, “Helping Them Heal,” Oct. 30). I too, was brought to tears when I read what the child told her, in his broken English: “Thank you, American,” and then hugged her.
We hear the word “hero” bantered about in varied forms these days. Heroes are those who try to secure the safety of others while putting themselves at risk. Such is the case these days with the immigration of Syrian refugees to our country. There may be risks as we bring innocent families to our country, but these are risks we face as we exemplify American ideals, and commit what are truly heroic acts of humanity.
