In response to Herb Damm’s letter (Sept. 22), I offer the following warning: Clusterboxes are coming to a neighborhood near you! Why do I say that?
Legislation making its way through the House and Senate, under the guise of postal reform, would do away with door delivery for businesses and residential customers and replace their delivery mode with clusterboxes.
Should you be concerned? Yes! Because, as Mr. Damm noted, thieves break into clusterboxes all the time, stealing checks and other important items. Some time ago, a Bakersfield newscast documented a newer, “safe and secure” clusterbox being hauled away by thieves driving a truck.
The good news is, for those of you who receive your mail at your house, that you can do something to stop your mode of mail delivery from conversion to such delivery. House Resolution 28, which has 210 co-sponsors, including Central Valley Reps. Jeff Denham, Jim Costa and David Valadao, expresses the sense of the House that door delivery be continued.
If you live in Rep. Devin Nunes’ district, please write or call to ask him to co-sponsor House Resolution 28. The security of your home mail delivery you save by doing so may be your own.
