I watched the vice presidential debate last night. Actually, I could only stomach the first 10 minutes before turning off my TV in disgust. I had looked forward to hearing each candidate articulate his views on a host of difficulties facing our nation. Silly me. This wasn’t a debate. It was two grown men squabbling like schoolchildren fighting over who gets to go down the slide next.
To think that one of these men will soon be a heartbeat away from the presidency is scary. Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton were bad, but these guys were over the top. They were rude and disrespectful of each other and the moderator, verbally snorting and rambling around like two bulls in a china shop, utterly ignoring the moderator’s questions and requests for some semblance of a civil discussion. It was embarrassing and irritating.
I say give the moderator two mute buttons for the next debate/squabble, or save network money and viewer sanity by canceling the whole thing. Historically, there was a degree of statesmanship on display in these events. They have degenerated into a parody. I will probably watch the next one, but with my thumb poised over my own mute button.
