In his letter of Sept. 6, Stanley Schaffer asserts that it is the “liberal elite” preventing the painting with the Confederate flag from being shown at the Fresno Fair. Interesting. I have heard the American Civil Liberties Union which has gone to bat for unpopular causes on countless occasions called “the liberal elite” when they defend something like abortion rights.
I can guarantee that “liberal elite” will be in the foreground of defending the right of painter Timothy J. Desmond’s picture to be seen at the fair.
Usually, it is the conservatives screaming against showing things they don’t like, such as public nudity, not this mythical “liberal elite.” Depends on whose ox is being gored.
Why can’t we just cut the name-calling and say the First Amendment allows all points of view to be expressed?
