Thumbs up, thumbs down

Thumbs up to all who made this year's Veterans Day parade in Fresno another great success. Organizer Lisa Tripp, the parade committee, community sponsors, countless volunteers and parade sponsor Table Mountain Rancheria ensured that this patriotic tradition would continue for the thousands of Fresno spectators. In addition, our troops throughout the world were able to watch the parade on the Pentagon Channel via the broadcast on KSEE24.

Thumbs up to Patty Hill, director of Golden State YMCA preschool programs in Farmersville and Visalia, who retired last week after 30 years. She touched thousands of lives over three decades, helping give children a crucial head start in school, as well as mentoring their families. She's been a hero in the battle to improve education in our Valley. We salute Hill's impressive service, and the service of all those who understand the important role that quality preschool plays in the educational development of our young children.

Thumbs up to Pam Fyock, the new chief executive of the Tulare County Fair. Fyock comes to the Tulare fair position after 2 1/2 years as CEO of the Sacramento County Fair. Her goal in her new job is to increase the number of patrons coming through the gates, revenues and community support. Successful local fairs bring together communities, and are an important reminder of the very direct connection of agricultural producers and San Joaquin Valley consumers. We are lucky in this region to have so many fairs that understand that role.
