Thumbs up, thumbs down

Thumbs down to Rep. Jim Costa, D-Fresno, for refusing to answer a reporter's question on whether he voted yes or no on Measure G. Costa is a Fresno resident, the city is in his congressional district. A big part of being an elected official is taking a stand on tough issues. Costa failed the test on the question of outsourcing Fresno's trash collection.

Thumbs up to Good Company Players, which wlll celebrate its 40th anniversary on June 26. The milestone is a tribute to Good Company director Dan Pessano, his wife, Laurie, and the entire team that has made Fresno's dinner theater one of the most successful in the nation. Through the years, the Good Company Players have put on 435 productions involving 2,532 actors. About 500,000 people have watched the shows.

Thumbs up to Central Unified School District, the Foundation for Central Schools, the Fresno County Library and PG&E for teaming to keep school libraries open for students and residents this summer. The sites are Herndon-Barstow Elementary, McKinley Elementary, Central High East Campus and Biola-Pershing Elementary.

Thumbs up to Oscar Speace for writing "Janka," the story of his mother, Janka Festinger, a Holocaust survivor. The one-woman play, which stars Speace's wife, Broadway actress Janice Noga, has been performed throughout the United States. You can see it at 8 o'clock tonight at Unitarian Universalist Church of Fresno.
