In reference to Kathleen Williams’ letter (May 7): She has it right. I did some research on this, and since Nov. 15, 2014, I have been watering nine lantana, six rose bushes, one tree and assorted other small plants in my front yard (mostly) with the water from the third rinse cycle. We have reduced the amount of soap, and we try to wash less often.
Our son told us that it would kill our plants, but so far everything is thriving.
It is very easy to do. I purchased a large commercial-type garbage receptacle with wheels and a hand pump and it has worked great for me. I also have two 55-gallon barrels that are full of rainwater that will probably last for about eight weeks for use in the back yard. I am probably going to let my front lawn perish this year. The four of us in our home take shorter showers, and I am considering not using the dishwasher.
The bottom line is, we all have to do our part to help out in this drought.
