'Buy America' town hall set in Fresno for high-speed rail project

A town hall meeting Wednesday in Fresno will feature a panel of manufacturing, political and labor leaders pushing for strong Buy America requirements for California's high-speed rail project.

Construction on the rail program could begin later this summer in the Fresno-Madera area under a $1 billion contract between the California High-Speed Rail Authority and a consortium led by Tutor Perini Corp. of Sylmar.

The town hall is organized by the Alliance for American Manufacturing, formed by manufacturers and the United Steelworkers. Speakers include AAM president Scott Paul, officials from the High-Speed Rail Authority, Fresno County Supervisor Henry R. Perea, Fresno City Council Member Sal Quintero, Jim Laing of Tutor Perini, United Steelworkers District 12 director Bob LaVenture, IBEW Local 100 representative Chuck Riojas, BlueGreen Alliance director David Foster, and Ben Lutze, a vice president of steel-manufacturing company Evraz.

The event at The Grand 1401, at 1401 Fulton St. at Tuolumne Street, is open to the public and includes a complimentary light meal. The doors open at 5:45 p.m., with dinner served at 6 p.m. and the program from 7 to 8:30 p.m.
