A Central Unified candidate was down by 20 votes. Now he’s pulling ahead

A candidate for the Central Unified Area 7 board seat has pulled ahead after being down by just 20 votes on election night.

Naindeep Singh Chann chipped away at trustee Rama Dawar’s lead over the last two weeks. As of the Nov. 21 ballot update, Chann was 78 votes ahead.

Central’s board race this year has been particularly contentious after a group of parents vowed to replace a group of trustees they accused of making behind-the-scenes decisions, like terminating a popular superintendent without cause. Trustees Dawar, Cesar Granda and Ruben Coronado seem to have all been ousted by challengers. Trustee Richard Atkins, who voted against Mark Sutton’s termination, kept his seat.

Chann was the subject of an attack mailer sent out just days before the election, accusing him of having moved in to the area with 30 days left to run for office.

There are still about 15,200 ballots left to count in Fresno County. The election will be certified in December.
