Fresno State engineering school joins movement in education

Fresno State is one of 120 U.S. engineering schools leading a movement in engineering education, the White House announced Tuesday.

In a letter presented to President Barack Obama, Lyles College of Engineering and peer institutions said they are committed to establish special educational programs designed to improve national and international health, security, sustainability and quality of life in the 21st century.

Lyles College of Engineering plans to offer a Grand Challenge Scholars Program starting in the 2015-16 academic year. The program will focus on providing students with hands-on research, entrepreneurship and innovation experience as well as global and cross-cultural perspectives.

Lyles College is working with senior White House officials at the Eisenhower Executive Office Building and at the National Academy of Engineering Keck Center in Washington, D.C.
