Minarets High School in eastern Madera County will be closed Wednesday due to a major water leak on campus.
All Wednesday classes and after-school activities are being canceled, including the freshman soccer game scheduled against Yosemite High School.
Principal Daniel Ching said a connector to a main water line cracked for an unknown reason near the school’s mechanics building. The leak was spotted around noon Tuesday and water was shut off shortly before 2 p.m. Ching said water flowed down a hill and didn’t cause permanent damage to school buildings.
School officials hope the leak can be fixed by mid-afternoon Wednesday. Ching said state law doesn’t permit schools to operate longer than two hours without running water.
High school exit exam testing previously scheduled for Wednesday has been postponed and likely will be rescheduled to March.
Ching said coaches have the option of holding practices off campus, but he hadn’t heard coaches’ plans by Tuesday evening. School officials will be posting updates on Minarets’ Facebook page.
