Suspect in Merced teacher's killing appears in court

Rudy Romero, accused of killing his schoolteacher wife, made his first appearance in Merced County Superior Court via video from jail Friday, but his arraignment will be continued until Thursday.

The public defender assigned the case asked for more time to review it.

Romero, 41, is expected to be charged with murder, along with an enhancement for using a deadly weapon.

He faces 26 years to life in prison, if convicted.

Diane Romero, 44, a third-grade teacher in Merced, was found dead with stab wounds Sept. 16, in the swimming pool of her home in north Merced.
