E. Daniel Hirleman is the new dean of the School of Engineering at the University of California at Merced.
He comes from Purdue University in Indiana, where he has headed Purdue's School of Mechanical Engineering since 1999.
Hirleman replaces Mark Matsumoto, who has been the school's interim dean since April.
Hirleman will earn $256,000 annually plus benefits.
