Exeter grads focus on moving forward

Four years of high school culminated in graduation Friday for more than 200 Exeter High seniors. Here are some of the highlights of their commencement ceremony:

The school: Exeter High

The ceremony: 7 p.m. Friday at Exeter Stadium.

School mascot: Monarch lion

School colors: Blue and gold

Number of graduates: 221

Time to complete graduation procession: 7 minutes.

Number of valedictorians: 1, Rebeccah Terhune

Number of salutatorians: 1, Joseph Newman

Total number of scholarships: 70

Total value of scholarships: $82,600

Some colleges graduates will attend: UC Berkeley; Cedarville University (Ohio); UC Merced, California State University, Fresno; UC Irvine; Lane Community College (Oregon); College of the Sequoias.

Attendance at graduation ceremony: 2,000-plus.

Most surprising moment: During the moment of silence, some people in the audience recited the Lord's Prayer in unison to protest a decision to not have a traditional invocation.

What he said to the Class of 2010: Speaking about students who received California Scholastic Federation honors, "These honor their commitment to academic excellence."
